To the Big Bend
This was an email update sent to my mailing list on July 12.
The first leg of the journey was fully enjoyable, even in the moments of heavy rain. The character of the river is about to change, and I expect my experience of it will change as well.
I'm wrapping up a couple days at home in Golden where I've been tweaking a few things and now I'm headed north, into Kinbasket, up to the Big Bend where the Columbia makes a hairpin turn and heads south for the first time. I'll be without cell service, and I expect to be without much human interaction. Kinbasket is a huge reservoir, created by Mica Dam (also huge), and so the days of exploring side channels and enjoying wetland bird life are over. Big mountains and all the weather they can create is what I anticipate for the next week or so.
